Nephrology network - Dialysis network - Tranplantation network
Nephrology is a distinct speciality in France. However, most of the nephrologists
think that the field of chronic renal failure excludes hospitalization in other
places than nephrology units (Soc Nephrol)
and play the role of internist.
Nephrology is almost always performed in hospitals. It was first individualized
during the years 1965-1975 in universitary centres (CHU - Centre Hospitalier
Universitaire), then in other public hospitals (CHG - Centre Hospitalier Général).
Nephrology units are quite rare in private institutions (Cliniques).
A study realized in 1992 sho wed that hospitalizations in nephrology units are distributed between
- CHU : 998 beds
- CHG : 791 beds
- Private : 218 beds.
